Partner Spotlight: MISO Elite and Byga

Promoting Hawaii Youth Soccer Talent Internationally

LOS ALTOS, CA (May 2, 2024) – MISO (Major Island Soccer Organization was founded in 1996 to provide the the island of Oahu its only USSF sanctioned league.

Since then, MISO has grown rapidly, introducing the MISO Junior league (U11-U19 age groups), three competitive Men's Open, a M35+ division (age 35+), a Masters Division (age 45+), a W1 Division (for competitive women), and finally a Futsal Division. Essentially, MISO now covers competition for all ages.

The rapid growth of the leagues showed the demand for soccer in Hawaii. What was missing? An elite youth program.

Enter MISO Elite. Formed in 2013 to provide an outlet for top players in Hawaii to showcase their skills internationally, MISO Elite has evolved into a program comparable to the US Club Soccer ID2/PDP program.

These programs select players based on "objective scouting of elite clubs and leagues, combined with recommendations from top Directors of Coaching" and bring the selected players together to practice and compete. Until MISO Elite, no program existed to bring together the most talented players in Hawaii and provide them showcase opportunities for US National Teams, Professional Clubs, and College Soccer programs.

Creating a club-independent talent program presents unique logistical challenges. Director Tom Atencio is the perfect man for the job.

Atencio boasts decades of coaching experience on the US West Coast in addition to professional playing experience and experience with US Soccer's development program.

To support his ambitions for the MISO Elite program, Director Tom Atencio turned to Byga. Calling it the "future of club technology", Atencio uses Byga constantly to set up programs, build rosters, and communicate with selected players. On a practice session day, players are checked in and evaluated using Byga's tryout module, which allows multiple coaches to rate players and store those ratings in a player's profile.

While typically used in a club setting, Byga offers a set of flexible features that translate well to a player development program like MISO Elite. That's why both NorCal and SoCal PDP programs use Byga.

From MISO Elite: "Mahalo Byga for making scheduling, registration, check-in & communication a breeze."

Since its start in 1996, MISO has grown fast. And there's a lot more to come from MISO Elite!

In addition to trips to Japan for the 2012 age group, and Southern California for the 2010 and 2011 age groups, MISO Elite will also run the MISO Games (an all island competition) in August. Follow MISO on social media for more information!

The vision In 2001, Chris Baer and a group of Ohio Premier Soccer Club coaches traveled with their teams to play at the St. Louis Soccer Park (currently the World Wide Technology Soccer Park ), a six field soccer specific complex in Fenton, Missouri. When they got back to Ohio, they made a pact: to get Ohio Premier its own soccer complex Now, twenty years later, Ohio Premier boasts a five field complex with two full turf fields, two Kentucky bluegrass fields and a state of the art Bermuda grass field. “At the time, we were just a group of young, ambitious coaches with A licenses who wanted to keep challenging each other,” says Chris Baer. “We wanted to push each other and the club to improve. Having our own facility would allow us to do more for our players.” For the entirety of its history, Ohio Premier had rented fields from the city, competing with other clubs and sports for field space. The fields were grass, there wasn’t a single turf field in the area, and the club had to rent indoor facilities in the winter. Field rentals and facility costs were a significant portion of the club’s budget. When rental prices increased, the club began to seriously consider building its own facility The Ohio Premier board looked at building an indoor facility at first. “We spent so much on rentals in the winter that we thought it would make the most sense. Over time that idea evolved into building all-weather turf fields that would be playable all year long.” In addition to turf fields, Ohio Premier wanted fast-playing grass fields similar to those in Arizona and Southern California. “We would play against west coast clubs and our teams would be a step slower because we were used to playing on grass that just didn’t play as fast,” says Baer. “It was important to us to have a surface that would allow us to match their speed of play.” That meant that they wanted a full Bermuda grass field, a rarity in Ohio. Baer and the team knew what they wanted, but had no idea how to get it.
